Let's face it, it's been a pretty miserable start to the year but things are finally starting to look up. There are definite signs of spring here in West Cornwall. The fields around Middle Colenso Farm are full of daffodils and there are primroses just starting to flower in the garden.
With only a handful of people out on the beaches and coast path, spring is a wonderful time to visit Cornwall especially for walkers and dog owners. Some of our favourite cafes and restaurants are starting to re-open after their winter breaks so you can enjoy the local hospitality without the crowds.
Many of our gardens are at the their best at this time of year. Think camellias, magnolias, rhododendrons and daffodils galore. Some of our favourites include Trengwainton on the outskirts of Penzance and further afield, Trelissick, Trebah, Heligan and Caerhays. Come April and May, it's all about the bluebells. Nearby Godolphin always puts on a spectacular display and the bluebell festival at Enys is glorious.
Foodies might like to mark May in their calendar with both the Porthleven Food Festival and St Ives Food and Drink Festival taking place that month. Both are within easy striking distance of our properties.
Here are a few of the events we're looking forward to over the next few months:
March 21st - August 8th Kurt Jackson Foxgloves
Acclaimed artist Kurt Jackson's new exhibition Foxgloves celebrates the iconic wildflower and opens at the Jackson Foundation Gallery in St Just in March.
From April onwards Minack Theatre
The season gets underway at the Minack Theatre in April with a host of live theatre and musical events for both adults and children. Even if you're not seeing a show, it's always worth a visit to explore this extraordinary outdoor theatre.
April 24th - 26th Porthleven Food Festival
One of the biggest events in the Cornwall food scene, the festival includes chef demos, live music and a host of events to keep the whole family entertained.
April 25th-26th Enys House Antiques Fair
Historic Enys House near Falmouth will be hosting a range of high end dealers and exhibitors. From 18th century furniture to midcentury collectables, folk art to architectural salvage, there's always a fantastic range on offer. It's also an excellent opportunity to visit the gardens.
May 8th Helston Flora Day
Flora Day marks the end of winter and is one of Cornwall's best known historic festivals. Celebrations begin at dawn with the first of four processional dances led by the Helston Town Band, winding through flower‑decked streets with locals dressed in traditional attire. Highlights include the famous Furry Dance with top hats, tails and floral garlands.
May 15-17th St Ives Food and Drink Festival
Make your way to Porthminster Beach for this three-day festival. There will be cooking demos from some of the biggest names in Cornwall's culinary scene as well as food stands, music and plenty of family activities.
