Fitness tips for the festive season

Here we are again. The festive season is almost upon us and with it myriad opportunities for over-indulging, missing exercise sessions and generally slobbing around on the sofa with a mince pie and a 12-hour box set. Faced with all that temptation, many of us give up on our fitness regimes over the Christmas period, waiting until January to undo all the damage with some New Year’s resolutions. But it doesn’t have to be like that. With a bit of willpower, it’s perfectly possible to start 2019 feeling fit rather than fat.

Don't neglect your fitness during the festive period. You'll reap the rewards in the New Year.

Make the most of your time.

Lack of time is one of the most common barriers to exercise so why not take advantage of the Christmas hols to fit in some fitness activities? Having a break from your usual routine provides the perfect opportunity to squeeze in some exercise and it doesn’t have to be a big session in the gym. Even a vigorous dance session at the office Christmas party will help offset those extra calories.

Try a seasonal activity

Winter weather and dark nights can make it hard to stay motivated but there are lots of seasonal activities to enjoy at this time of year. Outdoor ice rinks are hugely popular and great fun or how about a visit to a dry ski slope? If you’re looking for something a little more gentle, organisations such as The National Trust and The Ramblers Asssociation organise programmes of winter walks at venues around the country.

Ask for a fitness gift

If you’re anything like me, buying new exercise gear always makes me want to work out so ask Santa for a fitness-related gift. It could be anything from a fitness tracker to a new pair of trainers – whatever inspires you to get moving.

Don’t go it alone

Christmas is a time for family so get them involved. Whether it’s a Boxing Day walk with the kids or a 10k run with your partner, exercising with someone else is a great way to get motivated.

Be realistic

Let’s face it, we’re all going to eat and drink more than we do normally and it’s fine to have a few festive treats. Don’t feel guilty because you had a glass of mulled cider or a big helping of Christmas pud. Conversely, don’t use Christmas as an excuse for a complete blowout. Choose a glass of prosecco rather than a creamy liqueur, have a satsuma instead of that second mince pie. We’re talking sensible rather than Scrooge.

And don't forget, if you do want a little help getting your fitness back on track in the New Year we host Pilates and fitness retreats at our three holiday cottages near Penzance in West Cornwall. Do get in touch if you'd like more information.
